Rotary
Scholarships available in District 7370
Two scholarships are available
each for graduate study abroad through the Rotary Clubs of
District 7370.
The Ambassadorial
Scholarship is provided through District funds contributed
to the Rotary Foundation. Scholars are nominated by local
Rotary clubs, selected by the District Schlarships committee,
and approved by the Rotary foundation. Individual scholars
study on their own in a foreign university, which they select
but must be approved by the Foundation.
The World
Peace Scholarship is provided by the Rotary Foundation
for two-year masters degree program in International Peace
Studies and Conflict Resolution at one of seven Centers
around the world. Our district may nominate one candidate.
The competition is world-wide with the Foundation and cooperating
Centers selecting ten scholars each year for each Center. |

Our Current Scholar:
Jason Purdy
 |
Jason
Purdy lives in Selinsgrove and was sponsored by the
Selinsgrove Rotary Club. Art Bowen of that club is his
sponsor counselor, helping to prepare him for his Ambassadorial
year abroad. Jason is a Graduate of Lycoming College
where he is majoring in anthropology and sociology.
He just returned from study in Chile during the spring
semester 2004. He has |
also
traveled and studied in Spain and Japan, and for his
eighth grade school year he studied on his own in Hawaii.
Jason plans to spend his Ambassadorial year in Ecuador
at the University of Quito. He is fluent in Spanish,
has acquired good insights into the culture of southern
Latin America. Committed to service above
self, Jason plans to go into the Peace Corps for two
years thereafter. He writes, "In ten years I would
like to return to the USA and use my skills and knowledge
of other cultures, their beliefs, values, and motivations,
in order to better unite our diverse society in the
United States, so that we can continue to excel as a
nation." We look forward to hearing from Jason
during his year in Ecuador and upon his return next
year at District Conference.

Aimee
Gallagher lives in Ringtown and was sponsored by
the Ringtown Rotary Club. Frank Murray of that club is her sponsor
counselor, helping her prepare for her Ambassadorial year. Aimee
graduated from Bucknell University in 2003, majoring in biology
and French. Astutely combiningthese two interests, she is planning
a career in global health education. During the academic year
2003-2004 she worked on her masters degree in this field at |
George Washington
University. Obviously, her career goals match the ideals of
Rotary very well. We know she will be a great ambassador and
will continue to serve humanitarian goals in the years to
come. Aimee spoke to Rotarians at our district conference
in April 2004.
Aimee has already had considerable experience abroad and is
very able to communicate the cultural differences she has
encountered. She spent two months in New Zealand and Australia,
a summer in western Europe, a month doing marine biology in
the Virgin Islands, and a full year of academic study in France. It
was while studying in France that she became fluent in the
Frenchlanguage and was exposed to the social and political
situations in West Africa. She began her studies this fall
at the University of Dakar in Senegal. We look forward to
hearing of her experiences as her Ambassdorial year continues.
Ambassadorial Scholar 2003-2004:
Elisabeth Zack |
 |
Elizabeth
Zack, is studying literacy and developmental
psychology at the University of Melbourne, Australia.
She lives in Selinsgrove, PA, and was nominated by the
Sunbury Rotary Club. Beth
graduated from Gettysburg College with honors in psychology
in 2002. She is “passionate about making a difference
in our children’s futures.” Between graduation
and starting her studies "Down Under" this
past March, she worked in a psychological research laboratory
at New York University. She will return to speak to
our district conference in spring 2005 |
